Construction at Reston Station has continued even during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the general contractor working on the Metro Plaza’s last two construction buildings tweeted out an update last week.
Despite being designated “Office Building 3,” 1906 Reston Metro Plaza began construction before the recently-topped out “Office Building 2.” With the building now substantially complete, Neustar can soon begin moving their headquarters into the building. Last year the technology company signed a lease to occupy more than half of the office space in the 12-story building, which will replace its Sterling, Virginia headquarters. A CVS pharmacy opened on the plaza level earlier this year.
1902 Reston Metro Plaza, the larger and taller of the two office buildings, will be 14 stories at completion. Although the frame has topped out, significant work is still needed to complete the building. ICF International agreed to a whole-building lease in 2019, and according to Davis Construction’s tweet, the building will deliver next May. The first two levels will house restaurants and retail, including Virginia’s first Davio’s Steakhouse location.
The completion of these two buildings next year should round out the current construction at Reston Station, and should also go a long way towards activating the metro plaza as the lively urban center that was promised when Comstock first proposed the development ten years ago. As of 2020, much of the plaza-level retail has yet to open, including the Big Buns and Matchbox restaurants. This may not be the end of development on the block, however; the current rezoning and development plan allow for a boutique hotel on the current site of Founding Farmers. The Reston Station land lease agreement Comstock holds with Fairfax County will incentivize the developer to build that hotel sometime in the next ten years.
