A climate-controlled self-storage building is among the new developments popping up near the Wiehle–Reston East Metro station. Opened around the end of 2020, Reston Self Storage Plus is a five-story facility with elevator and drive-up access. The majority of the units are on the first and second floors of the building.
The new building replaces an old commercial building that was built in 1981 with numerous tenants over the years, most recently the Academy of Christian Education (ACE). Prior to the building’s 2019 demolition, ACE moved a mile down the W&OD trail to a new location on Parkridge Boulevard. There are no current plans to redevelop the neighboring SkateQuest ice skating rink that shares Michael Faraday Court.
Since the 2014 opening of the Wiehle–Reston East station, which is the current terminus of Metro’s Silver Line, the blocks within walking distance have been targeted for redevelopment at a higher density. Most of the existing buildings were low-rise commercial and industrial parks, and are now rapidly being replaced by a mix of uses, including a Hilton hotel, elevator townhomes, offices, and apartment buildings. As new development continues, the Self Storage Plus location will soon likely be one of the few remaining industrial uses in the area.
